Success means different things to different people. However many people’s definition of success would include ‘doing something that they’re passionate for and getting paid to do so.’ It seems simple enough, that is, until people have to determine their passions.
This should be the easiest question in the world to answer, "What is it that you would rather spend the rest of your life doing?" For many people, however this is a very difficult one to answer. It’s amazing the number of people that go through their lives without ever figuring this out.
If you’re looking to build a business around your passion then this question is one you must absolutely be able to answer. I believe that many of the people that struggle with this question do so because they haven’t taken the time to fully understand themselves. Knowing who you truly are and knowing what makes you “tick” is an essential first step in this process. To help you get started on this process of self-discovery, here are some thought provoking questions to consider:
- What of types things motivate me?
- What type of things upset me?
- What are my strongest qualities?
- What are my values?
- How would I describe myself to a stranger?
- How would my friends and family describe me to a stranger?
- What things do I love to do more than anything else?
- What types of things do I get complimented on the most?
Once you figure out who are and what drives/motivates you then there are two other areas you need to consider, your environment and the activities you like to do.
Is there some environment that makes you feel more comfortable that anyplace else? Do you go out to your garage to be around cars when you’re stressed? Do you find yourself at home in a bookstore or library? If you like going through the stacks of books and magazines and you find yourself being fascinated by curious facts that you find then something in the way of researching or archiving might be suited to you. If you would rather be working in your garden then any other place then perhaps a landscaping business is for you or maybe running a plant nursery. However, unless you enjoy spending at least 40 hours a week in a garage with cars, then you probably should not consider becoming a mechanic.
What activities do you enjoy doing repeatedly? A typical workweek is usually 40 hours, although it’s normal for most self-employed people to work upwards of 60-70 hours a week, so you must determine what activities you believe you can do day in and day out for the rest of your working days. Some people can spend all day in front of a computer screen working with some arcane computer language. If that’s you then a tech business in the IT field may be exactly what you need to start. Other people are gifted communicators and love to spend their days speaking to various people. These people are well suited for professional speaking careers, trainers, or sales.
The Answers to Your Question is…
So, can you be successful without knowing what you're truly passionate about? The short answer is yes. You can absolutely be successful in this world without being passionate about what you’re doing. Many people have done it, are doing it right now, and will do so in the future. But why would you want to do that to yourself? It’s never been an easier time to build a business that uniquely fits who you are. Spend sometime figuring out who you are, where you’re the most comfortable, and what it is that you can do better than anybody else and you will be well on your way to working your passion.
