5 Ways to Make Money From Your Passion for Photography

Do you love taking pictures? Do you have a hard drive full of pictures you've taken over the years? If you do then you might have the perfect opportunity to take you passion for photography and turn it into a thriving business you can run from home. Photography is already a very popular hobby not only because it is easy to get started in, but also there is an abundance of ways to express your creativity. Add to this the possibility of immorality through pictures that survive generations and it is easy to see the allure of photography. Here are 5 popular ways you can build a business around photography:

1)Take a Pic, Sell a Pic

This is by far the most prolific way to monetize your passion of photography.  I could have easily done the entire post just on this topic. The basic concept is you get paid for the pictures you take. The beauty here is that there are so many ways to do this. Here are some of the more popular avenues that people pursue:

  • Events-Wedding, graduations, birthdays, corporate events, awards banquets, seminars, trade shows.
  • People-Headshots, yearbooks, sport teams, holiday portraits.
  • Property– Home staging, real estate website photos, inspections, interior design photos.
  • Freelance-Sell pictures to stock photo libraries, magazines, websites (iPhoto, Shutterstock, Esty), Flickr
  • Blog-Create a blog and sell photos.

2) Sell Your Knowledge

If you have years of experience in photography and have the ability to demonstrate that knowledge in a way that others can understand and follow then you can convert that knowledge into a number of businesses:

  • Books– Ebooks are cheap to produce and are gaining popularity. Hard cover books are still popular and now can be self published.
  • Videos– How-to videos are great way to showcase your knowledge and are also cheap to create.
  • Teaching a Class– Teach at a local school or college. Or maybe a local camera store with extra room
  • Website– Create an authority website and monetize it through a combination of advertising, product sales, and affiliate commissions

3) Equipment

If you interest is more in the hardware than the creative aspect of photography you can still profit form it:

  • Brick and Mortar– The rise of digital cameras and cellphone cameras are making these types of stores less popular but there will always be hobbyists and collectors that will seek out a store where they can purchase products to further their collections.
  • Online- If you have access to cameras and their accessories -new or used- you can always set up an e commerce website to sell your products 24 hours a day all over the world. You can do a stand alone site or go the Ebay route.
  • Repairs/ Rentals– If you go the brick and mortar route then a potential revenue stream could be the repair of broken equipment or the renting of equipment, mainly to semi-professional photographers who operate part time.

4) Create Products

Websites like Zazzle, Esty, and Cafepress have made it incredibly easy to express your creativity and get paid for it. Customization is very popular these days. Just about any product can be customized with a photo. Here's a list of things you can offer through these sites:

  • T-shrits
  • Key Chains
  • Post Cards
  • Coffee Mugs
  • Calendars
  • Mouse pads
  • Cellphone cases
  • Playing cards

5) Make Them Better

A great niche business you can start is photo retouching. With an eye for detail and the proper software you can offer a service to enhance/perfect pictures that someone else has taken. You can partner with a professional event photographer and handle all of the editing and retouching work. You can also offer this service independently or through a site like Fiverr.com where you can do photo enhancements (restoring of old photos) for a set prepaid price.

The potential for making money from photography is huge. While my list covers some of the more popular ways to monetize a passion for photography there are certainly others that I did not tackle. I encourage you to research the ones I've outlined here and seek out other ways as well. With some creativity and a lot action you can change that age old saying from "A picture is worth a thousand words" to "A picture (business) is worth thousands of dollars". 1. I was just searching for this information for a while. After six hours of continuous Googling, finally I got it in your web site. I wonder what’s the lack of Google strategy that do not rank this type of informative websites in top of the list. Normally the top websites are full of garbage.

  2. My spouse and I stumbled over here different web page and thought I might check things out.
I like what I see so far. Look forward to looking over your web page
