Everyone wants to be successful but not everyone knows how to be successful. This list is a roadmap to success. Incorporate these suggestions into your daily routine, commit to them fully and you will see that success is within your power. It always has been. You have the power to change the course of your life and become successful beyond your imagination.
1. Marry the right person. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness or misery.
I couldn't agree more with this suggestion. Knowing that you have someone that is in you're corner and they will support you in your endeavors will give you a greater sense of confidence.
2. Work at something you enjoy and that's worthy of your time and talent.
On average you will spend close to a quarter of your life working. Wouldn't you rather spend that time doing something that you are passionate about. Life is short, don't spend it being miserable.
3. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
I always look for ways to stand out from the crowd. One of the best ways I've learn to do that is to under promise and over deliver on my commitments. People will always remember when you do this and will be more likely to become a repeat customer.
4. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
Positive thinking can reduce stress and improve your health. Maintaining a positive attitude also increases the chances of positive outcomes for challenges you may be facing in your business or personal life. As the saying goes, what your focus on increases. So focus on positive results to get more of them.
5. Be forgiving of yourself and others.
We're all human. We all make mistakes. If someone has done something wrong to you or if you have wronged someone the best thing you can do is acknowledge it, accept it, learn the lesson, vow to be better, and move on. Dwelling on the past keeps you in the past. Life has moved on, so should you.
6. Be generous.
When you treat people with kindness and respect you show them how you want to be treated. Acts of generosity invite reciprocity. Not in every case. And sometimes the reciprocity part doesn't come immediately. But even when I don't get anything in return, I find that being generous, especially to those that don't expect it, makes me feel better about myself and that's usually reward enough.
7. Have a grateful heart.
You may not have all that you want. You may not have all that you think you need. But chances are, you have more than you think you do. Stop and think about all of the misfortune in this world- war, poverty, famine, disease, and senseless violence. If your life is free of these things, be grateful.
8. Persistence, persistence, persistence.
This picture says it better than I ever could…
9. Discipline yourself to save money on even the most modest salary.
"Budget thy expenses that thou mayest have coins to pay for thy necessities, to pay for thy enjoyments and to gratify thy worthwhile desires without spending more than nine-tenths of thy earnings."-The Richest Man in Babylon
It's a cold hard reality in life that the more money you have in the bank the more peace of mind you have. Success in life is about having options. Another reality, options cost money.
10. Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated.
I've covered this under "Be generous" but here's another thought; Imagine how much better the world would be if we all lived by this simple rule.
11. Commit yourself to constant improvement.
A friend of mine has a saying: "The room for improvement is the biggest room there is". No matter how successful you are, there is always the next level. Something to strive for that will make your business, your life, or your relationships that much better. Commit to making yourself better today than you were yesterday and that you will be twice as good tomorrow as you are today.
12. Commit yourself to quality.
Everyone values quality. People are willing to pay more for quality. Quality sets you apart from those that claim to be similar to you. When you focus on having only quality thoughts, quality connections, and quality interactions you will see a dramatic increase in the quality of your life.
13. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power or prestige, but on relationships with people you love and respect.
Being happy is as simple as making a choice to be happy.
14. Be loyal.
Take a survey of everyone in your network and ask them to list what they value in other people and loyalty will undoubtedly rank near the top of the list. Loyalty is necessary for all good relationships. And any successful person will tell you that one of the primary ways they became successful is by developing quality relationships with people. People do more business with those they have a relationship with.
15. Be honest.
It's the best policy. Really!
16. Be a self-starter.
The responsibility for your success starts and ends with you. No one else can make it happen for you. You will need help along the way and if you follow the suggestions on this list you won't have a hard time getting the help when you need it. But the first step will always be yours to take. As long as you can motivate yourself to take action towards your goals and dreams, success will always be in your control.
17. Be decisive even if it means you'll sometimes be wrong.
This is one of the main things that separates successful people from everyone else. Most people are fearful of making big, life changing decisions. They're scared of negative outcomes (i.e. what if I fail?, what if I lose all my money?, what if I succeed?). The majority of people will let these fears paralyze them into inaction and try to convince themselves that they are ok with the current situation. Don't be that person. Make a decision to make the changes you want to see in your life. Any missteps you make can always be corrected.
18. Stop blaming others. Take responsibility for all areas of your life.
Wherever you are currently in your life, you got there as a result of the choices you've made. Stop blaming the economy, your boss, or your family for what they did or did not do to you. Ultimately, how you chose to respond to those outside influences led you to where you are now. The buck always stops with you. The good newsis once you start making better choices they will lead you to a better life.
19. Be bold and courageous.
When you look back on your life, you'll regret the things you didn't do more than the ones you did. Don't go to your grave with a list of regrets.
20. Take good care of those you love.
Especially your children! You'll be old one day and your life will be in their hands!
21. Don't do anything that wouldn't make your Mom proud.
Mothers have your best interests at heart. They love you unconditionally and usually are among your biggest cheerleaders. Try not to disappoint them.
